Rio Chaise by Oscar Niemeyer
Oscar Niemeyer’s most important furniture design–made in collaboration with his daughter Ana Maria Niemeyer–is the Rio Chaise, a rocking chair originally designed for his personal use in 1970.
The curves of the Rio, reminiscent of the coastline of Brazil and the figure of a woman, offer a harmonious blend of aesthetic innovation and ergonomic functionality. Its elegant lines and thoughtful design make it a timeless piece, capturing the essence of Niemeyer's artistic brilliance within the realm of furniture.
While originally designed in the 1970s, the Rio was not available for sale until 1978, when it was produced by Tendo Brasileira.
This Rio Chaise is composed of shaped plywood stained with black lacquer and tensioned wicker of woven natural cane stretched over the frame to form the seat of the rocker.
